ANNOUNCEMENTS

L-SILL 2:

The Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) is pleased to announce that National Semiconductor has funded the Linking Science, Inquiry, and Language Literacy Project (L-SILL) for an additional three years. The new grant funding cycle will run from 2008-2011. Eight school sites have been selected to participate in the L-SILL 2 Project. The Maine Department of Education is also supporting the L-SILL initiative by funding L-SILL Enhancement, an initiative to support ten additional school sites in implementing the highly effective science notebook strategy in elementary classrooms. The science-literacy connection is receiving nationwide attention, and MMSA is pleased to be an integral part of the effort to promote the critical connections between science and language arts. Teachers interested in participating in L-SILL events should click on the Calendar of Events link on this page.

The Linking Science, Inquiry, and Language Literacy Project (L-SILL) began as a three-year initiative (2005-2008) of the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA), supported with funding from the National Semiconductor Foundation and involved 12 school sites across Maine. The goal of L-SILL is to improve student achievement in science by supporting sustained professional development and the implementation of science-authentic classroom strategies that incorporate reading, writing, and speaking in the context of inquiry-based science. L-SILL provides school-based support with a variety of workshops and conferences open to any K-6 science teacher or administrator in Maine.

L-SILL 2 is a three-year continuation (2008-2011) of the L-SILL collaboration between the MMSA and National Semiconductor and involves 8 school sites across Maine. L-SILL Enhancement (L-SILL E) is an extension of L-SILL, funded by the Maine Department of Education in partnership with MMSA, to support 10 school sites for the implementation of the science notebook strategy in the context of inquiry-based science throughout the 2008-2009 school year.

Educators interested in professional development opportunities related to the science-literacy connection may participate in L-SILL events, such as the Statewide Science and Literacy Conference, workshops and presentations, and online workshops.
